“B.R.A.V.E.!” - My newest and most topical program teaches students the value of respecting others for who they are, stressing the fact that we are all special inside. The program also gives some strategies for dealing with bullies, especially motivating inactive bystanders to act, including the fact that it’s a must to approach teachers and adults for help.
This was a brand new program developed in 2007, created to respond to the needs of young students to understand how to deal with bullying. It is based on the famous studies of nationally known Stan Davis, and the definitive work of Dr. Olweus and stresses that the bystanders that usually see bullying going on (and not doing anything to help) can be a BIG help in reducing bullying:
B.R.A.V.E = Be Ready to Assist a Victim Everyday!
This program attempts to get children to help reduce bullying at school. Research has shown that there are 3 victims in every bullying event: 1-the Bully, 2-the Victim, and 3-the bystander(s).
Just about every program just deals with telling the victim how to avoid a bullying situation. Well, my program is different. Yes, I do briefly mention safe tactics for the victim, but most of the program tries to encourage students not to be bystanders. They feel bad, knowing that the event they witnessed was wrong and they let it happen. They can suffer long-term psychological effects as well.
We use magic effects to show the strength in numbers of bystanders. The bottom line is if there are bystanders willing to stand up with the victim, the bullying typically disappears. Of course, there is a whole approach to helping all 3 classes of victims. It is way too much information to effectively deal with it in a 45 minute assembly. I recommend you obtain Stan Davis's books on bystanders, and Dr. Olweus’s books. Read their research. It is quite revealing as to what goes on in the “Bullying Cycle”.
I choose to focus on helping the bystander. It is usually this victim that is overlooked. I truly feel that the information shared in this assembly presentation when used within a school’s overall anti-bullying program can be very effective.

The sad fact is that there are many assembly programs that aren’t very good. They’re a waste of your time, your children’s time, and your teachers’ time. I thought it’d be helpful if I presented a few criteria that’ll help you choose assembly programs that would be worth your while.
1. Only bring in a presenter who is a full time professional and actually makes a living as an
assembly presenter.
As I mentioned, I have been a professional entertainer and speaker for over thirty years. Many of the people doing assembly programs are part-timers or amateurs just trying to make some extra money.
